In moments of fanstasy, or sometimes exasperation, we all daydream about
escaping to a private island of our own. We imagine a place where the
biggest decisions involve when to have our next nap and what's for dinner,
lobster or mango? No more annual reports and annoying coworkers, we think.
However, island ownership has many realities we forget to consider. If
you thought your internet connection was shaky on the mainland, wait until
your satellite receiver blows into the ocean during a storm. Presto, you've
instantly lost contact with the outside world. That may sound fine to
you, but wait until your leg's broken and you need to be taken to the
nearest hospital two hours away. Of course, the latter is a worst case
scenario, but it demonstrates that island living requires planning and
sometimes, hard work.
Living full time on a private island may seem idyllic, but an island
lifestyle requires a certain kind of personality. There's no such thing
as a 'typical' island owner, but they do tend to be strong individualists,
often placing a premium on privacy. Unless you have a man Friday or a
team of staff, expect to get your own hands dirty when things need doing.
Patience and perseverance are in order too; the weather often dictates
your schedule and you may not always be able to leave your island at will
in order to pick up supplies. You need to plan ahead in order to preserve
your self sufficiency. Make no mistake, there are a great many up sides
to owning a private island too – think of the dinner party conversation
alone.
